On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin commented that the dynamics between Russia and the United States appear to be shifting, according to a report from the state-run news agency Tass, though no specific details were elaborated upon.
“The situation is evidently evolving,” Putin remarked during the opening of a Russian Security Council session. “We’ll have to wait and see where it leads.”
He added that the matter would be addressed in the meeting, with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Foreign Intelligence Service Chief Sergey Naryshkin providing updates.
Tensions between the U.S. and Russia escalated after the Biden administration backed Ukraine in response to Russia’s invasion in February 2022, but efforts are now underway to mend ties. During the Security Council meeting, Putin acknowledged that rebuilding relations with the U.S. would be challenging, as reported by Tass.
“It’s a complex process, to say the least,” he noted.
According to reports, Putin held a late Thursday meeting with Steve Witkoff, a U.S. special envoy, to discuss the Trump administration’s suggestion of a 30-day ceasefire in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. Putin reportedly asked Witkoff to relay Russia’s perspective to President Donald Trump.
Earlier that day, Putin had expressed general support for a truce but emphasized that numerous specifics still needed clarification before any agreement could be finalized.
